How to Build Laptop with Raspberry Pi 2

Raspberry Pi can be used to create a wide range of electronic projects. You can even use the Raspberry Pi 2 to create a DIY laptop. This idea was founded on Indiegogo in last year and it was named as the Pi-Top. This Raspberry Pi powered laptop consists of a 13 inch screen and it has an excellent battery life of 10 hours. The Pi-Top comes as a kit and you will need to go through the assembly process. If you want to purchase it with the Raspberry Pi, you will need to spend $299 and if you already have a one, you can purchase only the kit for just $269. And you also buy Raspberry Pi Starter Kits an affordable price.

The build

The Pi-Top Raspberry Pi kit consists of three main parts. They include the screen, which comes with a connector, the base, which holds the battery that is sealed behind a metal plate and the base top that can host the keyboard. A hub board is included along with the kit and you need to connect the screen, keyboard, battery and a Raspberry Pi 2 to it. All the installation instructions are provided along with the package and you just need to follow them. You don’t need to seek any professional assistance when assembling this laptop. A person who doesn’t have any tech skills will be able to complete the assembly process within few hours.

The dashboard

Once you complete the assembly, you can boot your Pi-Top and it will direct you to a custom dashboard. This dashboard has general settings that can be controlled according to your specific needs and requirements. You can also find some basic applications along with a normal desktop. You will also be asked to download the latest update to the operating system during first boot. You can download the update from GUI or via the command line.

Is it worth to buy?

Is it really worth to spend your money on a Pi-Top instead of purchasing a traditional laptop? This is a solidly constructed laptop and it has a durable design. Therefore, you will be able to use it for a long period of time. The keyboard that comes along with Pi-Top is a little robust. Even though this Raspberry Pi laptop is recommended for kids over 13 years of age, they might need the assistance of an adult during the assembly process. You can also notice some rough edges in the interface. However, the features offered by Pi-Top are decent and the benefits you get from it are totally worth when compared to the amount you pay. If you have a child who is over 13 years of age, you can think of purchasing this Raspberry Pi 2 laptop to him/her without any doubt on mind. It will help them to get started with hardware hacking or programming in a convenient way. Out of everything, the Pi-Top will teach your kids how to keep everything in one place.
